According to Michael Paul Henson, author of A Guide to Treasure in Pennsylvania, the commonwealth is filled with many lost and hidden. Lancaster County is no exception.
Here’s what Henson says about Lancaster’s highwaymen:
A good location to do local research on highwaymen that operated during the 1740s is around Lancaster. These robbers infested the roads, making travel dangerous. No known organized gangs operated at this time, but numerous individuals carried on a profitable trade in wholesale robbery in the area. Taverns and farmers were robbed, livestock was stolen, and homes burned.
