Most people know Safe Harbor Dam from the outside—a massive concrete wall holding back the Susquehanna, humming quietly as it turns river water into power. Fewer ever see what lies beyond the gates.

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, step inside one of Lancaster County’s most impressive and tightly controlled pieces of infrastructure with Uncharted Lancaster. This guided tour of Safe Harbor Dam is limited to just 10 participants and provides an up-close look at the dam’s inner workings, history, and the stories that have accumulated there over more than a century.

If you’ve ever wondered what’s inside the belly of the beast, this is your chance.

Event Details

What to Expect

This guided experience takes you inside Safe Harbor Dam for a behind-the-scenes look at the structure, systems, and spaces that most people never get to see.

The tour is led by Jonanthan “JR” Rhoads, a supervisor with 17 years of experience working at both Safe Harbor and Holtwood hydroelectric dams. JR brings deep institutional knowledge, firsthand experience, and an insider’s perspective, making this a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity.

Along the way, Adam Zurn of Uncharted Lancaster will provide historical context, local lore, and a few Safe Harbor area tall tales and urban legends that add a rich storytelling layer to the experience.

As participants move through the massive interior of the dam, the tour will travel between multiple levels of the structure. Participants should be comfortable navigating several flights of stairs, as elevators are not available and stair access is required to fully experience the tour. This vertical movement offers a real sense of the dam’s scale and complexity.

This experience is well-suited for adults and families with older children or teens who are curious about history, engineering, and the hidden places that shape the Susquehanna Valley.

Please note: Tickets are non-refundable. All registrations are final unless the tour is cancelled due to severe weather.
