Historical Society Highlights is an opportunity for various local historical societies to feature a fascinating story from their area as well as any upcoming events. In this inaugural edition, here is the Conestoga Area Historical Society with a story about the possible origin of how Safe Harbor acquired its name from their president, John Stehman.

Flashback to April 18, 1903: A moment frozen in time as the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge takes shape over the Conestoga Creek at Safe Harbor. With Charles A. Sims and Company at the helm, this photo captures the raw beauty and ambition of early 20th-century engineering. Standing on the south side of the Conestoga River and gazing north, witness the construction of a landmark that would be destroyed the following year in March by a massive ice jam. #HistoricEngineering #RailroadHistory #SafeHarbor

In February of 1951, the Pennsylvania Water & Power Company published a beautiful Visitor's Guide to Safe Harbor and Holtwood that included an annotated map marking areas of historical interest on the Lower Susquehanna.

Here are two screenshots from the 14:56 minute mark of the documentary 'Conowingo Dam: Power on the Susquehanna.' It shows two archaeologists working at Little Indian Rock. It's a fascinating clip because it highlights how the petroglyph-covered rock looked pre-dam. I've also included two edited versions that indicate current water levels when Lake Aldred is at "recreational depth." Click the bio link in the profile to read more and watch the fascinating video.
