It was on June 4, 1773, that George Washington visited Lancaster for the first time.

It's Water Week, so let's talk about the Susquehanna River. Ice on the mighty river a femme fatale—mysteriously beautiful and potentially dangerous. More than once, this naturally occurring phenomenon has had catastrophic effects on the Susquehanna Valley. Here are a few unique ice on the Susquehanna short stories. Here’s a fun fact from tomorrow’s Falmouth Northwest River Trail History Hike for @lancasterconservancy’s #waterweek. The first canal ever built in Pennsylvania (and one of the nation's first) was opened in the late 1700s on the west bank of the Conewago Falls, close to where the York Haven dam stands today.

To celebrate @lancasterconservancy's Water Week, here's an article by Benton Webber about the mouth of the Conestoga. An under-recognized geologic feature at the mouth of the Conestoga is the cut made through a ridge that parallels the Susquehanna. Imagine what an enormous lake must have existed for millions of years stacked up behind this ridge as the watersheds attempted to drain into the Susquehanna. Join me at the Millersville Borough Office for my "Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor" presentation for the Millersville Area Historical Society on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at 9 am.

A year ago today, the Safe Harbor Trestle Bridge opened to pedestrian traffic. It is worth every penny of the $9 million, offering stunning views of the Susquehanna, Safe Harbor dam (images 1 and 3), Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad (slide 1), York County, and the petroglyph-covered rocks of Big and Little Indian Rock (slide 2 take through the on-site binoculars).
