Signed books and freebies will be available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin me at the Hall of Philosophy in Mt. Gretna on Friday\, August 28\, 2026\, at 7 p.m.\, for my Capital Day: The Continental Congress in Lancaster presentation. This free\, in-person program is open to the public and hosted by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn September 27\, 1777\, Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, became the capital of the United States for one remarkable day. But this was no ceremonial honor. It happened during one of the most dangerous moments of the American Revolution\, as British forces advanced on Philadelphia and the Continental Congress fled for safety. \n\n\n\nThis presentation explores the dramatic sequence of events that brought some of the most important figures of the Revolution to Lancaster. Beginning with the Battle of Brandywine on September 11\, 1777\, the program follows the collapse of American defenses\, Alexander Hamilton’s urgent warning to evacuate Philadelphia\, and the tense journey of Congress through Pennsylvania as delegates sought to stay one step ahead of the British army. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, we will look at the movement of vital public papers\, the hidden journey of the Liberty Bell\, John Adams’ firsthand account of the flight from Philadelphia\, and the arrival of Continental Congress members in Lancaster. The story culminates at the old courthouse in what is now Penn Square\, where Congress met\, conducted official business\, and then quickly adjourned to York for greater safety. \n\n\n\nMore than a local footnote\, Capital Day reveals Lancaster’s brief but meaningful role in the survival of American independence. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Lancaster’s remarkable history during the first Lancaster Capital Day\, a free\, family-friendly street festival featuring live music\, historical performances\, tours\, exhibits\, activities\, local food\, artisans\, and more in the heart of downtown Lancaster. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLancaster made history on September 27\, 1777\, when the Continental Congress met in the city and made it the capital of the United States for one extraordinary day. On Saturday\, September 26\, 2026\, the community will gather in Penn Square to celebrate that remarkable chapter and the people\, places\, and traditions that have shaped Lancaster County. \n\n\n\nThe first Lancaster Capital Day will transform the heart of downtown Lancaster into a free\, family-friendly street festival filled with live music\, historical performers\, reenactments\, architectural and historical tours\, art exhibits\, hands-on activities\, local organizations\, craft vendors\, food stands\, a beer garden\, Capital Day trivia\, and more. \n\n\n\nProgramming will explore Lancaster’s history from the founding of Pennsylvania through the present day\, including Lancaster’s role as the nation’s temporary capital during the American Revolution. Visitors can also enjoy Lancaster Central Market\, participating downtown businesses\, and special Capital Day activities taking place throughout the surrounding area. \n\n\n\nThe festival will be centered on Penn Square\, with activities extending along King and Queen streets. Activities run from 8 a.m. to noon and include a one-day scavenger hunt. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin me on Saturday\, October 3\, 2026\, at Safe Harbor Dam for a morning of family fun featuring tours inside the 95-year-old megastructure\, a fishing derby\, food vendors\, and educational booths. The free family fishing derby runs from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Plant tours also begin at 8 a.m. The last tour will enter the plant at noon. Along the approximately four-mile route\, Chris will explain the history of Muddy Run\, how pumped-storage hydroelectric generation works\, and the important role the facility has played in supplying electricity to the regional power grid for more than half a century. \n\n\n\n📸: Constellation Energy\n\n\n\nWhen commercial operations began in 1966\, the Muddy Run Pumped Storage Facility was the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in the world. Today\, its eight generating units can produce up to 1\,070 megawatts of electricity during periods of peak demand. \n\n\n\nBut how does a pumped-storage facility actually work? Where does all that water go? Why is electricity used to pump water uphill at night\, only to release it again later? \n\n\n\nChris will answer these questions and share stories about the facility\, the surrounding property\, and the history of this corner of southern Lancaster County. \n\n\n\n📸: Lori R\n\n\n\nThe hike will follow the Lakeshore Trail around much of Muddy Run Park’s 100-acre lake. Join me on Tuesday\, November 17\, 2026\, at 7:00 PM at the Elizabethtown Historical Society for my Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI will be recounting my expeditions down the Lower Susquehanna to explore the mysterious Native American petroglyphs hidden on the ancient river at Safe Harbor. These 1\,000-year-old rock carvings represent the oldest human-made artifacts in Lancaster County and one of the most significant archeological sites in the northeastern United States. I will discuss their significance\, possible meanings\, and some local legends surrounding the pictographs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis in-person program is free and open to the public. It is perfect for adults and older children who love to explore or enjoy local history.
