If you are interested in seeing the petroglyphs but not up for braving the rapids below Safe Harbor check out the four on display at the Conestoga Area Historical Society. They are currently open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 and 4 pm.

On This Day in History: May 28, 1800.

If you are a novice kayaker in search of an easy float, look no further than Rock Hill outside of Millersville. It's a short 2.5 to 3.5-mile excursion depending on where you get out at Safe Harbor. Not to mention, the trip takes you past several interesting and historic locations. Best of all, this water-themed side quest can be more steering than paddling. This curious-looking character is more of a warning than decoration. He's an "eavesdropper." The name comes from a person who lurked under the eaves of a house to overhear what was going on inside. Carved faces like these were tucked into the "eaves" to remind people not to gossip because you never know who might be listening. King Henry VIII had figures like this placed in the eaves of his palace's Great Hall to serve as a reminder to both staff and guests. Located on the edge of Columbia near the banks of the Susquehanna River hidden in the brush is the abandoned ruins of the St. Charles Furnace. While you can safely climb inside the structure today, things would have been very different 150 years ago when internal temperatures ranged between 1,600 and 2,300 degrees.🔥

A perfect place to cool off. It’s nothing but forest today, but Shenks Ferry was once a bustling community. Over the decades, it saw ferry crossing, hotels, iron mine, coal dredging, and a doomed dynamite factory. Click the link to learn more about Shenks Ferry.
