A Watcher in the Eaves
The original Eavesdropper adorns the historic Bausman House, one of Lancaster’s oldest townhouses and a rare survivor of the city’s early architectural landscape. Carved directly into the structure, the face occupies an unusual position—neither decorative flourish nor obvious structural element.
Similar carved faces appear throughout Europe and early America, sometimes described as eavesdroppers, watchers, or guardians. In the days before air conditioning, when windows stood open during hot summer months, such figures were often said to serve as reminders: conversations on the street could easily drift indoors. Positioned just steps from the courthouse, the East King Street Eavesdropper would have overheard more than its fair share of whispered deals, heated arguments, and civic drama.
Whether warning, joke, charm, or signature, the Eavesdropper remains a small mystery—one hidden in plain sight.
From Architecture to Artifact
The idea to recreate the Eavesdropper began as an experiment: could a small, overlooked architectural detail be transformed into a tangible object that carried its story indoors?
Using detailed photographs and careful modeling, the Eavesdropper was recreated as a three-dimensional form that preserves the original carving’s character and expression. Rather than smoothing away its irregularities, the replica embraces them—honoring the handmade nature of early architectural ornament.
The result is not a novelty, but a modern architectural fragment: something that feels discovered rather than invented.
Two Ways to Be Watched
The East King Street Eavesdropper is available in two distinct editions, each designed for a different kind of space.
The Wall Edition. Designed to hang like a small architectural plaque, the Wall Edition measures approximately 7 inches tall and features an integrated keyhole hanger with seven recessed neodymium magnets for easy mounting. Available in one of three styles: (1) unfinished with a hand-carved appearance, (2) textured desert bisque, or (3) textured limestone. Due to the unique finishing technique, no two eavesdroppers will look exactly the same. Price: $34.99 to $36.99
The Fridge Guardian. Smaller in scale but no less watchful, the Fridge Guardian edition features two powerful neodymium magnets, making it ideal for refrigerators, filing cabinets, or metal doors. At roughly 3.5 inches tall, it comes in three styles: (1) unfinished with a hand-carved appearance, (2) textured desert bisque, or (3) textured limestone. Due to the unique finishing technique, no two eavesdroppers will look exactly the same. Price: $14.99 to $16.99
The Eavesdropper Bundle. For those who want both forms of the watcher, a bundled set includes the Wall Edition and the Fridge Guardian available in all three finish styles. Price: $44.99 to $48.99
