Hidden Lancaster: A Self-Guided Scavenger Hunt Through the Red Rose City

What secrets are hiding in plain sight around downtown Lancaster?

A carved face watching from a roofline. A vanished courthouse where the nation once paused. A forgotten milestone nearly disappearing against a white wall. A grave chosen to make one final statement about equality. A sidewalk marker tied to one of America’s most famous expeditions.

These are the kinds of stories waiting inside Hidden Lancaster, a new self-guided scavenger hunt app from Uncharted Lancaster.

This interactive adventure sends players through downtown Lancaster to uncover overlooked clues, historic markers, architectural details, and surprising stories hiding all around the Red Rose City. It is part walking tour, part scavenger hunt, and part puzzle-filled journey into the past.

How It Works

Hidden Lancaster is designed to be played on your phone at your own pace.

After purchasing access, your team receives a unique access code. That code can be used anytime to begin your adventure, so you do not need to play on a specific date or at a scheduled time. You can even give an unused code to someone else as a gift. Just remember that each access code is single-use.

Once your team is registered, the app guides you from checkpoint to checkpoint. Each location includes an address for your next destination. Tap the address in the app to open Google Maps, use it to navigate to the checkpoint, then toggle back to the scavenger hunt app when you arrive.

Most challenges are geofenced, meaning they unlock when you are physically near the correct location. Once on site, you may need to refresh the page to reveal the full clue and answer box.

What You’ll Discover

Hidden Lancaster begins at Penn Square, the heart of the city and the place where Lancaster briefly became the center of the United States. From there, the hunt leads players through downtown streets, churchyards, sidewalks, and historic corners where Lancaster’s past is still hiding in plain sight.

Along the way, you’ll uncover stories tied to Revolutionary War leaders, vanished landmarks, early transportation, watchmaking, architecture, aviation, exploration, and the fight for equality. Some clues are carved in stone. Some are written on plaques. Others are tucked into rooflines, sidewalks, cemeteries, and overlooked details most people pass without noticing.

Each checkpoint reveals a different kind of secret: a forgotten historical detail, a surprising person tied to a place, an unusual architectural feature, or a hidden meaning waiting in plain sight. Whether you are a lifelong Lancaster local or visiting the Red Rose City for the first time, Hidden Lancaster invites you to slow down, look closer, and see downtown in a new way.

A Game of Observation

Hidden Lancaster is not just about reading history. It asks you to look closely.

At each checkpoint, you will read a short history blurb, then complete an observation challenge. The answer might come from a plaque, a monument, a carved detail, a grave marker, or something else hiding in plain sight.

The faster you solve each challenge, the more points you earn. Each checkpoint begins with a maximum of 1,000 points, but the score decreases over time. Wrong answers carry a small penalty, and hints are available if your team gets stuck.

Each checkpoint includes two hints, each with a 100-point penalty. If you are truly stumped, you can reveal the answer, but that carries a 250-point penalty.

The goal is simple: explore carefully, solve quickly, and see how high your team can climb on the leaderboard.

Is This a Treasure Hunt?

Hidden Lancaster is not a prize-based treasure hunt. There is no buried loot, no cash prize, and no one-day race to the finish.

Instead, it is an always-available scavenger hunt experience you can play whenever it fits your schedule. Bring friends, family, coworkers, or out-of-town guests. Play for the challenge, the leaderboard, and the fun of uncovering Lancaster’s hidden history.

Teams that secure top spots on the leaderboard earn lifetime bragging rights as some of Hidden Lancaster’s sharpest explorers.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Hidden Lancaster is designed as an outdoor, self-guided experience. You do not need to enter any buildings to complete the required clues. Some checkpoints are near businesses, museums, churches, or historic buildings, but the answers are visible from public areas.

Teams may include up to six players. One active device per team is recommended for submitting answers, though teammates can help spot clues and solve puzzles.

Because the app uses GPS, players should enable Location Services and begin with a well-charged phone. If the main phone dies or stops working, your progress is saved to your team account. Simply log in on another device to continue where you left off.

As always, use sidewalks and crosswalks, stay aware of traffic, respect private property, and explore responsibly.
