This 90-year-old concrete fortress wasn’t built to repel invaders but crush stone...some 2.3 million cubic yards of it. All to make cement in the construction of the Safe Harbor Dam. In fact, yesterday marked the anniversary of when Safe Harbor Dam first began generating power only 20 months after construction started. It occurred on December 7, 1931.
Ninety-two years ago today, on December 7, 1931, the Safe Harbor Hydroelectric Dam began generating power for the first time after just 20 months of construction.
For those brave enough to venture below the Enola Low Grade, scores of beautifully constructed tunnels and culverts await your discovery. This one is near New Providence, Lancaster County. Click the bio link in the profile to learn exactly where you can find this tunnel inside of a tunnel.
Last night, along with the rest of the @hptrust board, I enjoyed an unforgettable tour of the future Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy.
According to the '1875 Historical Atlas of Lancaster County,' Mount Joy occupied a conspicuous position during the Revolution, particularly the portion that now constitutes Mount Joy's borough and its surroundings. Click the bio link in the profile to learn more.
