Lancaster County is full of communities with peculiar names. This series examines their curious etymology. Next up: Mount Joy.
This farmhouse at what is now Silver Mine Park was built by Isaac Henry in 1799. Later, John Tucker lived here circa 1850. Next was Harvey Filley, who also owned the Silver Mine operation across the road from 1870 to 1879. The Miller family lived here and farmed the area starting in 1927. Finally, the Eva Groff family lived here from 1953 to 1970.

The history of Martic Township as recorded in the '1875 Historical Atlas of Lancaster County.' For example, the text states that Martic Township was settled by an industrious and enterprising class of citizens who prospered in both the areas of agriculture and general business. However, the township was initially organized under the name of Martock and was among the first legally established in Lancaster County.
