On August 17, 1871, the Charles M. Howell Masonic Lodge, No. 496, was founded at Safe Harbor. The group held its meetings on the third floor of the Odd Fellows Hall until it moved to its present site of Millersville in 1899.
In October 1938, workers broke ground near Mt. Gretna to build an escape-proof maximum security prison. But Depression Era budget cuts stopped the "Alcatraz of Pennsylvania" from ever being completed. Now LiDAR imagery helps reveal what the site would have looked like. P.S. This was also the final hiding place for in last spring's Easter Egg Treasure Hunt where I gave away $1,500.
Today, we use the terms graveyard and cemetery interchangeably. Both are used to describe the place where people are buried. But you might be surprised to know that there is a subtle difference between the two.
When was the last time you forded a creek? At Fishing Creek, you get to do it *three* times! This was one of the stops during last spring's Easter Egg Treasure Hunt. Plan your visit for a hot day and do some creek stomping.
#repost from @lancohistory.
In 1879, a rag-tag group of Christmas day-born treasure hunters led by the "Sorceress of Lititz" Hannah Hetherley set out to find buried riches hidden near downtown Lititz. Legend holds that they found it, but the magic protecting the cache was too powerful to allow its removal. Can you break the spell?
