The Lititz Mystery Spot
Along the side of a road leading from Millport to Oregon on the outskirts of Lititz lies a strange mystery, and one that has baffled residents for generations.
Known as the Bottomless Pit, or the Lititz Mystery Spot, it’s an unassuming, often murky green pool of water that is surrounded by a handful of trees next to a farmer’s meadow. One can easily even miss it while driving along the back country road where it exists.

So, what makes it so unique?
Some say there’s no bottom. Through the years, many fantastic stories have been told about this anomaly: one involving a cow that accidentally fell in and came out at the Lititz Creek miles away. A similar story involves yet another cow that was also engulfed, this time, ending up in Australia.
Several locals were kind enough to share their personal experiences on this supposed curiosity of nature.
“As a young kid, some friends and I dropped a fishing line with a sinker into it, played out 100 feet of line and still didn’t hit bottom,” admitted one Lititz native. “It was said to be connected to underground waterways and caves throughout the area. It’s not man made,” he added.
Legend holds that over the years, it has swallowed up cars, people, livestock, washers and dryers, and other large objects. Others have said it’s quicksand, or a portal to another dimension.
“I heard a pig fell in it, and emerged days later in a stream near Manheim,” the same person said.
“As a kid, I was scared to death to drive by the pit,” said another Lititz local. “My grandfather would say that cattle fell in and came out in China!”
Whatever the Bottomless Pit is, it has become a source of legendary stories that no doubt has made for great conversations among those who know about its mystery.
