Built-in 1735 and used by millionaire ironmaster Robert Coleman between 1793 and 1805, Kepler Lodge is the Martic Forge's crown jewel! This former ironmaster's mansion was also home to the YWCA in the 1930s and the Jewish Community Center in the 1950s. Unlock the secrets of Kepler Lodge when you click the bio link in the profile.
Local History Nugget: In 1890, 79 butchers were operating at Lancaster Central Market. It is the nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market, dating back to 1731. Click the bio link in the profile to read more. Image courtesy of @lancohistory
On Friday, at a special open house event, I had the opportunity to tour the former Edisonville Mill located along Village Road outside of Strasburg, PA. Rebranded as the Olde Village Mill, the massive 1822 stone structure is a historic Pequea Creek landmark with a rich history dating back to 1740.
Local History Nugget: In 1763, William Henry, a master gunsmith who provided rifles to British troops during the French and Indian War, set out on the “first attempt that had ever been made to apply steam to the propelling of boats.” On its maiden voyage near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, however, the heavy stern-wheeler promptly sank into the murky depths of the Conestoga River. It was the first trial of a steamboat in the world. Despite the poor showing, Henry impressed his 12-year-old neighbor, Robert Fulton.
Like a moth to a flame, I find myself drawn to forested ruins. A summer road trip adventure had me hiking to Low's Ridge in the heart of the Adirondack to explore the cobblestone remnants of prolific inventor and entrepreneur Abbot Augustus Low's once-massive lumber and maple sugar empire. While little remains after being consumed by two fires and time, scattered foundations and a dam remain for intrepid explorers to find.
Located at 114-116 East King in Lancaster, PA, the Demuth Tobacco Shop was thought to be the oldest tobacco shop in the United States before closing in 2010. However, there are rumors that the Demuth Foundation is working to reopen the historic shop! 😊
