On September 27, 1777, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, became the capital of the United States for one extraordinary day. This presentation explores the dramatic events that brought the Continental Congress to Lancaster during one of the most dangerous moments of the American Revolution. From the British campaign against Philadelphia to Congressโs hurried flight west, the talk follows the people, decisions, and crisis that placed Lancaster at the center of the nationโs struggle for independence. Attendees will discover what happened inside the courthouse that once stood in Penn Square, who was there, why Congress stayed for only a few hours, and how this often-overlooked moment secured Lancasterโs place in American history.
This in-person program is free and open to the public, butย registration is required.ย Walk-ins will be accommodated as space permits. Please registerย each personย in your group on theย libraryโs websiteย or by callingย 717.786.1336.ย Clickย here to register.
