Short of it. The burning of the Columbia–Wrightsville Covered Bridge—immortalized in this rarely seen Albert Berghaus print—forever changed the course of American history by setting the stage for the Battle of Gettysburg. The three-day conflict would become the turning point of the Civil War.
On this Day in History: It was on April 1, 1930 that construction for the Safe Harbor Dam began. Twenty months later on December 7, 1931, the station started generating electricity. The concrete gravity dam with a total length of 5,000 feet going shore to shore cost $30 million (or $445,968,421 in today’s money). Click the bio link in the profile to read more.
In 1830, prolific cartographer, engraver, and artist William Wagner created 38 watercolors that accurately represented how the Borough of York looked. In the pre-photography era, this remarkable collection of architectural views makes York, PA, one of the most highly depicted communities of the early nineteenth-century United States.
The annual Uncharted Lancaster treasure hunt returns for its third year with the Quest for the Jewel of the Susquehanna. With $2,000 up for grabs and four ways to win, this promises to be my most exciting adventure yet!
About 15 years ago, I was on a tour of Safe Harbor Dam while taking the Hands-on History of Lancaster County course through Millersville University. Our guide, a retired employee, said they periodically send divers down behind the dam to remove large underwater debris like sunken trees. One time a diver went down only to resurface a few minutes later. He quickly climbed out, announcing he was quitting!
Believe it or not, there's a miniature replica of the 1787-1853 Penn Square courthouse in Buchanan Park. It was built in 1918 to sell Liberty Bonds. Click the bio link in the profile to learn more.
