Looking for a fun afternoon adventure? Try exploring Lancaster Conservancy's Steinman Run Nature Preserve. It perfect for creek stomping, and it even has this fun bridge. Towards the end of the Great Depression in 1937, rumors circulated that a “new maximum security prison” was to be built near Mt. Gretna in Lebanon County. Project architect Henry Hornbostel described it this way:
Tomorrow marks the anniversary of one of the most destructive disasters to ever strike Lancaster County.
One of my favorite winter activities is exploring the tunnels and culverts beneath the Enola Low-Grade Rail Trail. Most of these tunnels and culverts are completely hidden from view. Often scores of people pass over them every day without ever knowing.
Side Quest: Journey to the hidden watery center of Tobe Run Lair.
If you love old maps like I do, then you will enjoy this one by John Jarvis, former headmaster at Lancaster Country Day School, from 1978 highlights the many creeks, towns, and hills of Lancaster County.
