If you enjoy old maps the way I do, then you will love this one from 1821, highlighting Lancaster County's various townships, waterways, rivers, turnpikes, roads, mill sites with owner names, furnaces, and churches. Prolific cartographer and engraver William Wagner created the map. Today, few people are aware of Wagner's handiwork; however, for most of the 1800s, everyone in York County knew his name. Check out all the close-ups shown here. Next, click the bio link for more information about Wagner and how to purchase an 18" x 24" matte print for yourself.
The forests along the banks of the Susquehanna River hold many secret and forgotten places. One such place is Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve. If you visit, it’s easy to forget that it hasn’t always been a forest. There was once a community here containing homes, hotels, school, post office, gristmill, charcoal briquette plant, iron ore mine, dynamite factory, and even a narrow-gauge railroad.
If you drive into or out of Lancaster on East King Street, you might not even realize that you're crossing the Conestoga River on a bridge. In a car, you're over it in an instant. It's near impossible to see the water unless you're walking. But, this is an important location in our community's history.
If you think emojis are a fad, think again. This 😐 neutral face carved rock unearthed on Piney Island, Lancaster County, is believed to be between 2,700 to 4,300 years old. It is the oldest known representation of a human face found in the Commonwealth. Click the bio link in the profile to read more and see its location.
Believe it or not, there's a miniature replica of the 1787-1853 Penn Square courthouse in Buchanan Park. It was built in 1918 by students at Stevens High School to sell Liberty Bonds. Click the bio link in the profile to learn more.
In 1903, the Pennsylvania Railroad began an ambitious three-year engineering project which ran through Lancaster County, moving 22 million cubic yards of rock, killing more than 200 men, and costing half a billion in today’s dollars. This bold endeavor was the Atglen & Susquehanna Branch of the PRR. Today, it is a popular rail trail commonly known as the Enola Low Grade. Click the bio link in the profile to learn its history and see additional images.
