#repost via @lancohistory The Lady Gay paddleboat makes her last run on the Conestoga in this photo snapped on September 17, 1900. Captain John B. Peoples piloted the Lady Gay and her sister ships, Evelyn B. and Emma Bell, up and down the Conestoga River from Bridgeport to Rocky Springs, which included his own Peoples’ Bathing Resort during the 1890s and early 1900s. Both spots were great local swimming and recreation destinations.

Lancaster County possesses a wide range of architectural styles. The oldest is Germanic, with examples dating back to the early 1700s.

“Pequea Trolley”

Local History Nugget: Located at the corner of West King and Mulberry Streets, The Umbrella Works apartment building once housed the Follmer, Clogg and Company Umbrella Works factory. Built between 1880 and 1905, the five-story brick structure was the largest manufacturer of umbrellas in the United States by 1924. In addition, they produced life-saving parachutes for the United States Navy and Army during World War I.

With the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg approaching, I took a trip on a damp Thursday this summer to tour the battlefield. My itinerary included a stop at the Historic @dobbinhousetavern1776, one of Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic homes, for a late lunch.
