Poetry: “The Flood”

Here’s a poem that Estlack Joseph William was inspired to write after reading about the record flooding at Safe Harbor on January 29, 1978. Enjoy!

“The Flood”

Safe,
your harbor,
my favorite one too.

A plant
shares the
shock of you.

January 29, 1978,
so many blown fuses.
You filled that day.

Dads, up to
the ankles
in basements,

fished for solutions,
their flashlights cast

into cold
dark space

and wet,
reeling with

“dam it”
for bait.
