The first team to successfully complete this exciting five-week expedition unlocks the hiding place of the Jewel of the Susquehanna, which redeems for an 18-pound coin-laden puzzle box (worth $350) filled with $1,125 in one dollar coins. Second and third-place finishers receive $500 and $250, respectively.

In addition, an honorable mention fourth place prize of $125 for the team with the highest score on the leaderboard (and is not among the first three Jewel of the Susquehanna finders).

Beginning Saturday, April 15, 2023, I will release five sets of weekly clues to aid you in your quest. Here’s one to get you started.

Of course, if you want to find a hidden treasure, it helps to have a map. This year’s cartographic document comes from the hard-to-find 1899 Road Map of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The beautiful 18″ x 24″ atlas has been painstakingly edited and restored. Click here to order your treasure map from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s website or purchase one in person at LancasterHistory’s Museum Store.

How to Play

Playing is simple. 1. Register your team. 2. Purchase your treasure map. 3. Check Uncharted Lancaster’s website every Saturday at 8 am beginning April 15, 2023, for that week’s challenges. 4. Solve the weekly riddles and decipher the clues to unlock segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates.

Participants will be unable to find the Jewel of the Susquehanna until the final set of clues is released on Saturday, May 13, at 8 am in this exciting game of skill.

What to Expect

The Quest for the Jewel of the Susquehanna will have a format similar to last year. Participants will be solving weekly riddles to sleuth locations to visit in Lancaster County. Completing this adventure will require that participants have some local history knowledge, the ability to solve puzzles, and traverse non-level terrain. Being a nerd won’t hurt, either.

You can read more about what to expect in Jewel of the Susquehanna Treasure Hunt FAQs.

Find a Treasure. Preserve a Treasure.

Profits from the maps purchased via the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s website are again used to fund their digital archiving project. This ambitious undertaking involves scanning their 160,000 artifact collection, including many one-of-a-kind items highlighting Lancaster County’s rich architectural heritage. The project is expected to cost upwards of $200,000. So while you are busy trying to find a treasure, you are also helping to preserve one.

In addition, profits from the maps purchased at LancasterHistory’s Museum Store will be used toward their wider mission of educating the public on the history of Lancaster County.

Purchase your treasure map today for a shot at claiming your fortune and glory! Weekly clues begin Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Good luck…and remember Angelina is counting on you!
