If you love old maps like me, you will enjoy this one from Gerald S. Lestz’s 1987 limited edition, The Lure of Lancaster County, drawn by John Jarvis. It highlights the City of Lancaster with some of its buildings and places of interest.
Jarvis was a well-respected educator, community leader, and artist. He served as headmaster of Lancaster Country Day School from 1965 to 1990, during which time he made significant contributions to the school and the community. He was also a strong advocate for the arts and preservation. Jarvis was a founding member of the Hourglass Foundation and past president of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.
Lestz’s The Lure of Lancaster County was designed as a keepsake coffee table book with only 1,000 copies printed. I recently purchased number 283. The 1987 first edition has 124 pages with color photographs. It is described as an “important reference work.” Copies are often available on eBay and Amazon.

Lancaster and the Civil War
Entitled “Lancaster and the Civil War,” this lithograph highlights five Lancastrians and their contributions during the Civil War. You can purchase a copy on the Trust’s website for the low price of $25, including shipping and handling. The print’s center features the historic burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville covered bridge on June 28, 1863, which prevented Confederate forces from entering Lancaster County.
