A Brief Glimpse into Lancaster’s Past
The story of Lancaster County begins on May 10, 1729, when it was officially established by a charter granted by Governor Patrick Gordon. Carved from a large swath of Chester County, Lancaster was the first county formed beyond the original trio of Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia counties. This strategic move addressed the practical and legal needs of the residents far removed from the Courthouse in West Chester.
Legend spices up the county’s origin with tales of “thieves, vagabonds, and ill people” stirring local citizens to seek a new county. Yet, the more practical reason likely was Chester’s vast size, making legal and civic duties burdensome for those living near its western edges.
Celebratory Events and Activities
Join us for an evening filled with history, education, and fun activities that shine a light on Lancaster County’s founding moments and its evolution over nearly three centuries:
Extended Museum Hours & Special Tours: Explore our major exhibit, Thieves & Vagabonds, which dives deep into the county’s origins and the complex interplay of law and justice throughout its history. Dr. Mabel Rosenheck, Director of Education & Exhibition Planning, will lead two special tours at 5 and 6:30 pm.
Special Display: One-night-only display of the “Petition for the Establishment of Lancaster County,” a pivotal document on loan from the Pennsylvania State Archives. This very petition, drafted back in 1729, voiced the concerns of local citizens about “thieves, vagabonds, and ill people” troubling the rural expanses of what is now Lancaster County. Viewing this document offers a rare opportunity to connect directly with the voices of our county’s founders.
Insightful Presentation: Don’t miss Benton Webber, President of the Manheim Township Historical Society, as he delivers a captivating 20-minute illustrated presentation entitled 1729: The Year Lancaster Went Legit on the founding of Lancaster County and its changing borders at 6 pm.
Scavenger Hunt: The evening will also feature the Uncharted Lancaster Scavenger Hunt, a fun and educational activity suitable for all ages that will have participants exploring the Campus of History. Exciting prizes await those who take part! For younger visitors, the debut of “Harpo’s History Explorer’s Activity Sheet: Thieves & Vagabonds Edition” will provide engaging and interactive ways to learn about our local history.
Cake to Celebrate: No birthday celebration would be complete without cake! Join us for the birthday cake cutting ceremony around 6:30 pm to toast 295 years of Lancaster County.

Tickets for this memorable open house are available at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (65+), $5 for students (ages 11-17 or with College ID), and free for children 10 and under.
