Antique Toolbox: Last month’s mystery tool – Gambrel

Jennifer Royer, museum curator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, says that January’s mystery tool is a gambrel. This tool is a frame used by butchers to hang carcasses by the legs, such as the hock of a horse or other animal. The bar is made of wood. Each end has five holes drilled through it. Around the center is a wrapped flat iron hook. Through the base of the hook is a large oval iron ring. You might recognize a modern version of the tool shown on the right below.

This mystery tool stumped readers with guesses ranging from yoke to a scale.
