From battlefields to backroads, Lancaster Countyโ€™s long history hides more than a few restless spirits. In the Ghosts, Monsters, and Tales of Adventure presentation, Adam shares some of his favorite stories from his recent book of the same name. The presentation combines historical research, eyewitness accounts, and local folklore to reveal how the past still echoes through the present.

Prepare to meet long-dead soldiers, vengeful spirits, and mysterious creatures that haunt the river valleys and hollow hills of the Susquehanna region. Some stories may chill your bones, while others will spark your sense of wonder at just how deep Lancasterโ€™s legends run. Featured tales include:

Mad Anthony Wayneโ€™s Restless Bones
Revolutionary War hero General Anthony Wayne died in 1796, but his final resting place is anything but peaceful. After an unusual exhumation and reburial involving boiling cauldrons and misplaced bones, it is said his spirit still marches along the old military roads in search of his missing remains.

The Haunting of Shenks Ferry
In the quiet valley of Shenks Ferry, the ghosts of a forgotten dynamite factory and its tragic explosions still linger. Beneath the cliffs, old tunnels whisper with memories of workers lost to fire and smoke. Some say an even older spirit stalks those woodsโ€”a wendigo-like creature that watches from the shadows, especially when the wind carries the smell of sulfur.

Safe Harborโ€™s Spectral Guardian
Along the Susquehanna River near Safe Harbor lies a story of hidden treasure guarded by a seven-foot-tall Native American ghost. Sightings of this towering figure have terrified generations of treasure hunters who dared to search for the fabled gold. Whether he protects sacred ground or cursed riches, one thing is certain: no one leaves Safe Harbor without a story to tell.

Antonio Romezzo: The Man Lancaster Hanged Twice
Few tales are stranger than that of Antonio Romezzo, a 19th-century criminal who survived his first hanging in Lancaster. After being declared legally dead, Romezzo revived in his coffinโ€”only to face justice a second time. His ghost, they say, still protests the unfairness of a double execution.

Ironvilleโ€™s Headless Horseman
No collection of haunted tales would be complete without a rider from the other side. Near Ironville, a spectral horseman doomed by pride and misfortune is said to race toward Columbia before the stroke of midnight, forever chasing a destination he can never reach. Locals swear they can still hear the thunder of his hooves on autumn nights.

After the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Adam Zurn and purchase signed copies of his book, Uncharted Lancaster’s Ghosts, Monsters, and Tales of Adventure. Each story in the collection brings Lancaster Countyโ€™s history to life in a way that is equal parts educational, chilling, and entertaining.

Adamโ€™s unique storytelling style blends the thrill of exploration with the curiosity of a historian. Through Uncharted Lancaster, he invites readers and adventurers alike to experience history firsthandโ€”by walking the trails, exploring the ruins, and listening for the voices of the past that still echo through the landscape.
