June 23: So You Want to be an Adventurer Children’s Program

Calling all young adventurers! Join me at the Quarryville Library Center atย 357 Buck Roadย in the C. X. Carlson Cultural Room on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 2 p.m. for an afternoon thatโ€™s equal parts storytelling, history, and hands-on discovery. Click here to register for this free event.

Canassatego and His Six Arrows

I will start the afternoon by reading my children’s book, Canassatego and His Six Arrows. Based on real events that took place right here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this picture book recounts theย Great Treaty of 1744โ€”and the unforgettable moment when Canassatego broke a single arrow, but could not break a bundle of six.

This Iroquois leader taught colonial Americans a timeless lesson: we are stronger together. His words left a lasting impression on leaders such as Benjamin Franklin and helped inspire the foundational principles of the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution.

A tribute to Canassategoโ€™s six arrows can still be seen today, clutched in the eagleโ€™s talon on the back of every one-dollar bill.

Meet a Real-Life Adventurer

Following the story, I will lead a show-and-tell segment where kids can get up close with the tools of the trade. I’ll unpack my modern-day adventurerโ€™s backpack and share the gear I use when trekking through dark culverts, riverside cliffs, and ruins across Lancaster County. Curious minds can ask questions and even handle the equipment!

Hands-On Fun for Future Adventurers

Next up, itโ€™s time for hands-on discovery! One of the interactive stations set up for young adventurers will be a Petroglyph Rubbing Station. Inspired by the ancient Safe Harbor petroglyphs, children can create crayon rubbings of laser-engraved replicas of these mysterious Native American rock designs.

Reserve Your Spot!

The event is free and open to all ages, but registration is required, and space is limited. The deadline to register is Wednesday, July 17, at 10:15 a.m. Click here to register now. For questions or more information, contact Sharon Roche at sroche@quarryvillelibrary.org.
