I recently traveled south to where the 444-mile-long Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay at @concordpointlighthouse. It is the second oldest lighthouse in Maryland and the symbol of Havre de Grace. Built in 1827, the lighthouse served as a beacon for sailors in the Upper Chesapeake Bay until being decommissioned in 1975.
Columbia Borough's history can be traced back to when Native Americans occupied the area. Today it's remerging with the beautifully renovated @columbiapa.markethouse and fascinating antique stores like @bootlegantiques to visit Learn how roads, rivers, and rails led to the architectural gem that is Historic Columbia. The now abandoned Enola Low-Grade tunnel that Route 324 once passed through near Red Hill Road. In 2013, PennDOT began a $1.5 million bypass project. The early 1900s bridge was only 12-foot tall, which prevented modern-day farm machines, tractor-trailers, and fire trucks from traveling through it. The tunnel is still open to foot traffic. You can find it at the intersection of Route 324 and Red Hill Road. Click the bio link in the profile for the exact GPS location and to learn more about the Enola Low Grade.
Last month, I did some out-of-state adventuring in New York. While none of the trips had this goal, I ended up spending a lot of time on or near the Hudson River visiting the mouth, cartographically headwaters, and sections in between, mainly a whitewater rafting trip.
Imagine finding a giant chunk of ice nearly five feet in length in the Susquehanna. Not hard if it's February and below freezing. What about August when it's almost 100 degrees out? David Rankins did it four times in 1926 while dredging for coal. Its discovery revived many of the old mystery tales surrounding the ancient river.
Don't miss this exciting opportunity to visit some of the mysterious petroglyphs of the Susquehanna with @kayaklanco and myself. Only one slot remains for the Tuesday, August 9 outing. This aquatic 3-mile expedition takes you from Safe Harbor to Pequea with time spent on Little Indian Rock and Big Indian Rock to view and photograph the millennium-old rock art.
