How did Leola get its unique name? Originally known as Batten's Corner and part of Bareville, it wasn't until June 10, 1896, that Leola emerged as its own distinct community. But choosing a new name was no small task! The residents had their hearts set on the names Glenolde or Glenola, both of which echoed the charm they felt their village deserved. However, those names were already taken by existing railroad stations, leading to quite the naming conundrum.

Local History Nugget: In 1839, the Lancaster City Water Works reported that there were ONLY nine bathtubs in Lancaster, with the water coming from the Conestoga Creek. Nearly a hundred years later, things had improved…a bit. A New Deal Summary report showed that 1 in 3 residential structures lacked plumbing, heating, and utilities in 1936.
