Unseen Eyes and Echoing Meows: A Ghostly Encounter at Chickies Rock

Towering 200 feet above the Susquehanna River, Chickies Rock is one of Lancaster Countyโ€™s most iconic natural landmarks. The sweeping views from its quartzite summit draw hikers, picnickers, and photographers year-round. But as locals know, the rock holds more than just beautyโ€”itโ€™s steeped in tragedy, mystery, and tales of the supernatural.

A large rock formation, Chickies Rock, towering above the landscape with green trees and a clear blue sky in the background.

From haunted Native American spirits to apple-stealing cryptids known as albatwitches, the stories surrounding Chickies Rock are as layered as the cliffs themselves. For the then 17-year-old Brynn and her friends, itโ€™s become a favorite night spotโ€”equal parts scenic and spine-tingling.

One chilly evening in early 2024, Brynn and a friend visited the overlook after dark, drawn as usual by the thrill of the unknown. After watching the starsโ€”and even catching a glimpse of the northern lightsโ€”they began the short quarter-mile walk back to their car. The air was cold, and the woods silent except for the crunch of their hurried footsteps. As two teenage girls walking alone, they were already on edge.

Then came the sound.

A soft rustling in the trees to their leftโ€ฆ followed by a single, quiet meow.

They froze, glanced at each other, then broke into a sprint.

Two teenage girls running through a dark forest, showing expressions of fear and urgency.

What made it truly terrifying wasnโ€™t just the catlike cry, but how it followed them. No matter how far or fast they ran, the meowing stayed with them, never closer, never farther. It echoed through the woods as if something unseen stalked just out of sight.

When they finally reached their car and slammed the doors shut, the sound ceased.

Later, they learned that a friend had a nearly identical experience at the same spotโ€”alone at night, walking the same path, and stalked by a mysterious meow that always stayed just out of reach.

Was it a stray cat trailing them in the dark? Or something more sinisterโ€”a trickster spirit, perhaps, echoing animal cries to lure the curious off trail?

Some locals might dismiss it. But others recall a different story from around the same time.

That same winter, two brothers exploring the trail above the frozen river spotted a bizarre creatureโ€”grey-furred, long-legged, part deer, part greyhound, part kangaroo. It moved strangely, almost hopping upright before vanishing into the leafless woods. The brothers searched for it, but found nothing in the barren landscape.

A surreal scene depicting a tall, slender creature resembling a deer or kangaroo, standing on a snowy forest path under a glowing full moon, surrounded by misty woods.

Coincidence? Or further proof that Chickies Rock is a magnet for the unexplained?

And Chickies Rock has no shortage of ghost stories. The cries of Wanhuita, a Susquehannock woman who leapt to her death after witnessing her lover murdered on the cliff, are said to still echo through the trees. Her vengeful husband Wanunga is sometimes seen roaming the area near the tunnel, tomahawk in hand. Others speak of ghostly sentries in old-style hats standing atop cliffs, watching in silence.

There are tales of phantom drumming, shadowy figures, and tragic accidents. Even with fences now protecting the edge, the rock continues to claim livesโ€”by fall, by drink, or by despair.

For Brynn and her friends, that meowing in the dark may have been nothing more than a stray animal. But then againโ€ฆit might have been something else.

However, this wasnโ€™t Brynnโ€™s only eerie encounter. Click here to read about her chilling experience at Shenks Ferryโ€”a night filled with phantom sounds, mysterious window movements, and a car that refused to start. Much like Chickies Rock, Shenks Ferry seems to be another hotbed of supernatural activity in Lancaster County. Are these places truly hauntedโ€ฆ or just playing tricks on the brave souls who dare to visit?
