Finding buried treasure in Lancaster County isn’t as simple as grabbing a metal detector. Like all good stories, a bit of superstition and sometimes the supernatural is required to locate your “fortune and glory.” For example, a March 7, 1870, Intelligencer Journal article reported that treasure hunters were utilizing two ten-year-old girls and their magic mirror to search for gold hidden near Intercourse, PA.
The Gold Mania
The mania of hunting for buried gold appears to be very prevalent in Lancaster County at the present time. We are informed by a gentleman who resides near Intercourse that parties have recently been searching for money supposed to be buried not far from that village. It seems that these money searchers are directed where to look for the money by two little girls, about ten years of age, who are made to consult a glass termed an “erd spiegel,” meaning earth mirror in german, which indicates to the children where the treasure is concealed.
