Discover the Magic of the Safe Harbor Petroglyphs on WITF’s The Spark

The Susquehanna River holds many secrets, but few are as compelling as the ancient petroglyphs etched into its rocks near Safe Harbor. These carvings, dating back 800 to 1,200 years, are among the oldest artifacts in the Susquehanna Valley. Recently, I had the privilege of sharing their fascinating story on WITF’s The Spark with host Asia Tabb.

The Spark is where meaningful conversations ignite curiosity and understanding about topics that matter in our world and community. Asia and I dove deep into the significance of these petroglyphs, exploring their artistry, cultural importance, and the natural mysteries they reveal.

Why the Safe Harbor Petroglyphs Matter

Once, thousands of petroglyph sites adorned the Lower Susquehanna. However, the construction of dams submerged most of these historical treasures, making the surviving sites even more precious.

At the heart of this story are six remarkable rocks, including the iconic Little Indian Rock and Big Indian Rock. These sites boast one of the two largest concentrations of petroglyphs in the northeastern United States.

Little Indian Rock, in particular, features some of the most intricate rock art east of the Mississippi. Among its carvings are three serpents, each aligning with key solar events—the summer and winter solstices and the spring and fall equinoxes. Imagine standing there, witnessing the sunrise align perfectly with carvings made nearly a millennium ago, a testament to the ancient people’s understanding of their environment and the cosmos.

A Unique Connection to History

These petroglyphs are more than carvings; they are stories told in stone, offering insights into the natural world and the lives of the people who once thrived here. Visiting Little Indian Rock is like stepping back in time, connecting with ancient artisans who understood and revered the rhythms of the earth.
