May Mystery Tool
Jennifer Royer, curator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, has identified May’s mystery tool as an iron seam cutter with a turned wooden handle. Measuring 8.5 inches in length, the tool was used in leatherworking to cut precise seams.
This month’s mystery tool stumped everyone who submitted a guess.
Most people incorrectly identified the tool as a chisel, while someone else guessed it was used to remove a tire from a car rim. One particularly creative guess suggested it was a buttonhole cutter—used after stitching the outline of a traditional buttonhole to punch out the center. These types of punches, they noted, come in various sizes to match different button dimensions.
