Camel-Back
The “Camel-back” locomotive, Class L7-sb, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1905, shatters the cold silence as it passes over the Little Conestoga Creek at Flory’s Mill. Two small boys stop sledding long enough to wave to the engineer and gaze at the smoke pouring from the stack.
Not too many minutes earlier, the train pulled slowly away from the Lancaster Station on its northbound trip to Reading – 42 miles away. En route, passengers were picked up and discharged at small stations throughout Lancaster County; for example, East Petersburg, Manheim, Lititz, Ephrata, and Denver were regularly scheduled stops until November 5, 1950.
